Stowe House

Stowe House
Former home to the Dukes of Buckingham and Chandos, and home to Stowe School since 1923, this is a house adorned with traditions of aristocracy and learning for over 250 years. Up to the Great Sale of 1848, the Temple-Grenville family almost continuously rebuilt and refurbished 'Stowe Palace' in an attempt to match their ever-growing political ambitions with the latest architectural and interior fashions.

Stowe House Preservation Trust, owners of Stowe House since 2000, has completed 2 phases of a 6 Phase restoration plan. Stowe House is currently undergoing Phase 3 of its restoration, which includes the whole of the South Front Façade and the State Library interior. The State Library will be open again to the public from August 2010 onwards. The public can now:

  • Gaze upon the beauty of the North Front and South Front portico
  • View the stunning State Rooms decorated in the lavish Neo-Classical style
  • Be amazed by the magnificent Marble Saloon and the newly-arrived statues
  • Learn more about Stowe House through our interactive Interpretation Centre
  • Admire the picturesque Landscape Gardens (now owned and maintained by the National Trust), following in the footsteps of European tourists since the 18th century
