One of the oldest Windmills in the British Isles

 
This post mill is believed to be the oldest windmill in the British Isles, dating back to at least 1627. The mill was given to the National Trust in 1937. Restoration was started in 1963 and the work can be regarded as one of the forerunners of voluntary restoration work in the country.

 
To visit the mill is a truly remarkable experience because it represents the earliest form of windmill construction. Wonder at the way the mill and its machinery balance on the head of a massive wooden post. See the wheel-mounted tail pole that the miller used to manhandle the structure into the prevailing wind. Admire the skill and judgement he needed to reef and furl the great sail cloths by hand to match the strength of the wind.
